Operating since 2019 on select ships in the MSC Cruises fleet, Fire & Ice is a children's entertainment format that blends a fantasy-themed narrative with digital innovation to enhance traditional team games. Children are divided into two rival magic schools: the Ice Academy and the Fire Academy. Props like flags, bibs, and stickers foster a sense of team identity and help distinguish players during the games.
The digital component is the central thread supporting various challenges, but the activities extend beyond the screen. Video game elements are transformed into physical props that require the children to use their physical and mnemonic skills or cooperate as a team. Cruise ship entertainers play pivotal roles as moderators and presenters of the game, donning capes as Masters of the two schools to guide the children through the challenges.
This was a fascinating and challenging project I worked on at WayToGo for MSC Cruises. In addition to curating illustrations and character art, I contributed to the design and world-building. One of the most challenging tasks was designing a 3D-printed case/handle that fit the PlayStation 4 controller, transforming it into an easy-to-hold motion controller for one of the minigames. I also designed and 3D-printed a transparent extension to replace the front-colored light bar, making it visible from multiple angles.
